What's Your Birth Story?

What's Your Birth Story?

I remember when I was pregnant with my oldest daughter. I was curious about what to expect when “it was time” to give birth. What would the contractions feel like? Does every woman’s water break beforehand like in the movies? How will I know I’m in labor? Does it really hurt? Lol who was I kidding, I knew it would hurt but a girl can be a little naïve. I asked multiple women these questions. Once the conversations started, it led to me hearing endless birth stories. They were all unique, beautiful, and priceless moments captured in time. The interesting thing about birth stories, everyone remembers them differently. If you were to ask the people that witnessed your labor what they remembered, they will be different from your story. We all tend to forget some things that may have occurred that day due to being preoccupied with what is going on in the room, pain, hunger, pain (yes pain again), maybe sleep, nurses, doctors, visitors, etc.

Our birth stories may not have been what we envisioned but it is amazing to think of everything leading up to the big moment of going into labor, laboring, and giving birth. The stories are filled with so much excitement, passion, tears, laughs and most of all love. If you haven’t done so already, I would make sure to write your birth stories in a baby book, journal, or letter. An added bonus: have daddy write his version (his perception) of the birth, creating his own birth story. Keep it in a safe place. Maybe give it to your children when they are expecting their first child. I’m sure they will enjoy and appreciate the memories.

When creating a birth plan, it is just that, a birth plan. Plans may change depending on the circumstances. Some times birth plans are changed for unexplainable reasons which can increase stress, prolong labor, and may result in unnecessary interventions ie cesarean sections (c-section), forcep use, epidural, and oxytocin (Pitocin). This can alter the way you remember your birth thus creating an unpleasant birth story and experience.

If you need someone with experience to assist you and your partner with creating a personalized birth plan contact me today. I will assistance you with the alternatives to interventions while creating your birth plan. I will provide knowledge, encouragement, support, from our very first conversation until you are comfortable at home with your loving family.

In my downtime, I love to read! Learning and teaching is a passion of mine. Due to my passion of teaching. I want to share an article I came across. It's from a trusted organization called ACOG (American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists).
